Ricard lecture

Matthieu Ricard discusses the habits of happiness. Answer AT LEAST one of the following questions. What role does suffering play in contrast to happiness and must we have one to have the other? Why do we (as Americans) need recognition or gratitude from others to bestow kindness? What habit might you try to incorporate in to your life (based on this lecture)? Do you find this valuable?

if i understood correctly i do not believe we need to have suffering in order to have happiness. The problem is that we have a tendency to over indulge in our "happiness" which can ultimately lead to suffering.

I am going to try to incorporate mind training into my life. I know that when it comes to certain situations in my past I am unable to move away from the bad to allow myself the opportunity to heal and ultimately forgive and move forward. But as he said with every emotion there is an anicdote emotion and i know that there is still love [philia] for this person but the anger is blocking my ablity to embrace it. this is a valid exercise in many other areas as well, not just in relationships but in dealing with stressful situations, and so on in life.

One thing that struck me in this lecture is that pleasure diffuses itself when we have too much of it. I relate this to my free time. I enjoy and find pleasure with time that has no routine or work requirement, but currently find that when I have too much free time I do not enjoy it much. It gets boring and then I find myself unfocused and, actually, useless : ( I get nothing done except to sit (or lie) around and think about what I can do with my time!! It's terrible... I waste a lot of time thinking about what to do in that time (eeeegads!!).

So, I would like to set some solid short term (daily or weekly) goals that will aid me in the pursuit of happiness and implement a system of accountability to keep me on track! I believe I will be more productive and experience more happiness and fulfilment : )

One main habit im going to try and incorporate in to my life is mind transformation and how its the meaning of meditation. It forces you into looking at a new way of perceiving things. It can also help you change human qualities like loving kindness, patience, and openness. He said by meditating you can put your mind in a state of loving kindness. One thing I noticed was that everyone tries to shoot for the ultimate goal of happiness and sometimes drown themselves with too much happiness which can lead to suffering. Im not going to lie, i had a hard time trying to understand the lecture. I think he was talking about opening up your mind to happiness... to be more open and peaceful. This does create the door way for happiness and relief. I believe people just need to find their way of stepping forward to do this. This meditation does take time, but there are several ways to do it. People are to broad headed to just realize that sitting in silence is silly, but it is healthy and relaxing for your soul and inner happiness. Do you find this valuable?
